Essbase – Run Length Encoding (RLE) Compression

What is This?

When Essbase stores blocks to disk, it can compress the blocks using one of three different methods. Used appropriately the correct compression option can significantly aid performance.

RLE compression is one of the 3 available options. It is recommended for Planning databases. This is because it's typical to find the same data values duplicated across months, see screen shot below.

What Does it Do?

Taking the sales figure above, the default behavior is to separately store the $100 value for Jan, Feb, Mar etc. With RLE compression, the $100 is stored only once with a reference that it is duplicated x times. Across 12 months this can reduce database size by a factor of 6.

How to Set it Up?

RLE compression is enabled via Essbase Administration Services. Clients should consult with your M-Power consultant prior to setting this up.
